Beanbasket advises users of Netscape Messenger, Mozilla Messenger, and Mozilla Thunderbird to make sure they always have the latest versions of these programs.  These can be downloaded at http://www.netscape.com and http://www.mozilla.org.

Some of the screens may vary slightly from those shown in this document.

Netscape Messenger, Mozilla Messenger, and Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. In Netscape and Mozilla Messenger, click Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings on the Edit menu.  In Mozilla Thunderbird, click on Account Settings in the Tools menu.

2.      Click on Add Account.
3.      Select Email account and click Next.

4.      Enter Your Name and the Email Address provided to you by your Beanbasket Account Representative, and click Next:

5.      Select the Incoming Email Server Protocol
·         POP3 (or POP) - This protocol downloads a users mail from a remote server and saves it on a local machine. When downloading your mail, you have the option of keeping a copy of the messages on the server, or deleting it upon downloading to your local computer.
·         IMAP - This protocol will allow you to keep the messages on the remote server and allows you to view and manipulate the messages with out saving them on the local system. This is most advantageous if you access email from multiple computers. Note that it is still possible through settings within your email software to download email and store it locally on your computer.  **IMAP is required if using the Beanbasket Spam Filtering services.
In the Outgoing Server box, type the Outgoing Mail server (the server that sends your mail) provided with your email account information.
In the Incoming Server box, type the incoming mail server  (the server from which you receive mail). provided with your email account information.
6.      Enter the Account Username provided by your Beanbasket Account Representative and click Next.  This username will sometimes be different than the prefix on your email address, so make sure to double check it.

7.      Enter the Account Name and click Next.  Note that this is just a name used locally, and can be anything you would like.
8.      Review the settings.  If all are correct, click Finish to continue.

9.      Back in the Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings window, click on Server Settings in the left pane.  Put a check mark next to Clean up (“Expunge”) Inbox on Exit

10.  IMAP Users:  (if you are using POP, skip this)  Click on the "Advanced" tab, and UNCHECK the option "Show only subscribed folders". Make sure that "server supports folders that contain subfolders and messages" is checked.  You make check the “Use IDLE command if the server supports it”.  Maximum connections should be set to 2.  Larger numbers will cause odd behavior.  The rest of the configuration should already be set to something like it is here.  If not, change it to match what is in the picture below.  Click “OK”, and then click “OK” again on window underneath this, to get back out to your inbox.

11.  Click on your newly created Inbox.  If you aren’t prompted for a password, click on Get Messages.  When the password prompt comes up, enter the password provided to you by your Beanbasket Account Representative.  You may need to click on the expander just to the left of the Inbox in order to view the sub-folders.
