Search Engine Optimization Techniques

Date: 10/30/2006

How the search engines find your site and products is of great importance to most web sites. Meta data, product descriptions, URLs, and paid advertisements such as Google Adwords play an important part on how a search engine finds your site. Meta descriptions and keywords are part of the web page that tells search engines what to expect on the page. Meta descriptions should be short, concise sentences or fragments that describe the current web page. Search results may display the Meta descriptions of the pages that it indexes. Meta keywords are groups of words, separated by commas, which function as adjectives. Their main purpose is to help with organic search results. Organic search results are non-sponsored search results. The best part of organic search results is that you do not pay anything for them. Search engines will search the page content including the URLs.

If you are using Meta keywords, then your page should try to use them. The greater the correlation between keywords and the actual text that appears on the page, the higher the page will appear in the search results. The URL provides information to search engines. By using URL rewriting with keywords, ones site could become friendlier for people and machines.

There are pitfalls to avoid when setting up your site. Images that contain text might look nice, but search engines will not be able to read them. This fact is especially true for product and category descriptions. Short product descriptions do not help search results. Try to use different words and phrases in the descriptions and keywords. Open up the thesaurus and use those synonyms for keywords and descriptions. Search engines spider or navigate your website via the links. If the link is broken, then the search engine, and probably potential customers, will be unable to get to the page.
