This month Beanbasket is focusing on one of the single most important facets of driving and converting sales through your online store, Search Engine Optimization. The upcoming release of Beanbasket 4.2 rounds out the top 10 techniques that can be used to optimize your store for maximum search engine ranking.
- Page titles for each category and item page in your online store.
Currently, the page titles are derived by using data available on the page already. For example, if you are looking at a list of items in a category called "Sport Shirts" we could make the title tag display "Sport Shirts from mydomain.com". While this provides for context sensitive titles, page titles can now be explicitly defined for each page in the catalog.
- Meta description and meta keywords for each category and item in your online store.
Beanbasket supports meta keywords and description for items and categories.
- Category and item names in <H1> tags.
This is currently available to any integration. CSS can be used to style the <H1> tag such that it looks appropriate in your design.
- All image and link tags contain ALT values.
Using the item name as the ALT tag value is available today for any integration. Category/item name as the ALT tag is appropriate from a usability as well as SEO capacity.
- Rewrite URLs to be more search engine friendly.
Today we have the ability to use URL rewriting to make the page addresses appear static (all ending in .html). Although some spiders and crawlers (such as Google) have made great progress in indexing dynamically generated sites, there are still some engines which have difficulty fully indexing such a site. Beanbasket now allows the merchant to enter one or more keywords that will be included in the URL.
- Beanbasket generated site map for use with visitors as well as site crawlers.
Beanbasket has an API that can be used in store integrations to provide the category structure of your site in a hierarchical (outline) manner.
- Google generated site map file for use with Google sitemaps.
This functionality has been identified as a significant need for SEO optimization. This functionality will provide as much 'help' to the Google crawler as possible for complete site indexing. We do have some clients running their own Google Sitemaps utility and posting the results manually.
- No frames.
Beanbasket will not integrate site designs that use frames.
- No dependency on client-side scripting languages for navigation.
By default Beanbasket does not rely on any scripting languages (ie: Java Script) for site navigation. This allows spiders and crawlers to fully index the site.
- Ample availability to contribute content for categories, items, and other content specific pages.
